Flutist

Syrinx Jessen-Flutist- Picture Simon Höfele

Syrinx Jessen began her musical career at the age of seven playing the flute and piano. Her first flute teacher was Caroline Tuytel, with whom she studied using the Suzuki Method, and at age ten she won her first competition. Competitions in which she won first prizes include the National Flute Competition – The Netherlands, Prinses Christina Concours-The Netherlands, Stichting Jong Muziek Talent – The Netherlands, and the Fontys Competition -The Netherlands. In winning the Fontys Competition she was awarded with a scholarship. As a result of winning the International Competition for Woodwind Instruments – The Netherlands, she had the privilege to perform Fryges Hidas’ flute concerto as a soloist with the Royal Military Band Johan Willem Friso – The Netherlands. She was also selected for the BJIMC – The Fifth Beijing International Music Competition Flute – China, The Carl Nielsen International Competition Flute – Odense/Denmark and The ARD Music Competition Munich – Germany.

Syrinx received her bachelors degree in Flute from the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague- The Netherlands. She had orchestra studies with Emily Beynon and Kersten McCall, solo flutists of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, as well as private piccolo lessons with Vincent Cortvrint, solo piccoloist of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. In the last year of her bachelor studies, Syrinx studied in Karlsruhe on an Erasmus Scholarship with Prof. Renate Greiss Armin. She continued on to pursue a masters degree with Prof. Renate Greiss Armin at the Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe-Germany, after which Syrinx studied a second Masters in orchestra with Prof. Pirmin Grehl at the Hochschule für Musik Luzern, Switzerland. She has participated in masterclasses with Gaby Pas van Riet, William Bennett, Samuel Coles, Rien de Reede, Paul Verheij, Abbie de Quant, Jutta Pulcini, and Patricia Morris.

Syrinx has performed as a soloist with orchestra works by J.S. Bach, Griffes, Chaminade, Hidas, and Mozart. As a (solo)flutist she has played in orchestras, chamber music formations and festivals like; Entrée Orchestra- Youth Orchestra coached by members of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, National Youth Harmony Orchestra of the Netherlands, North Holland Youth Orchestra, Youth Orchestra of the Netherlands, “Musician to be encouraged” by the European Union Youth Orchestra, Festival Junger Künstler Bayreuth, Deutsch- Skandinavische Jugend Philharmonie, Theater Pforzheim, Festspielhaus Baden Baden Kammerorchestra, Weingartner Musiktage (Germany), Weingartner Kammerorchester, McKinsey Musik Festival, Maria Milstein-Duinstreek kamermuziek Festival and the Aurora Festival (orchestra & chamber music). Syrinx was solo flutist of the Mannheimer Philharmoniker in Germany. From the summer semester 2018 she is studying “Historical development and Baroque flute”.

Soprano

Besides her flute studies, Syrinx has been studying singing with the American Soprano Cheryl Studer at the Hochschule für Musik Würzburg Germany. She recently received her bachelor’s degree and is continuing her masters with Prof. Cheryl Studer. She was selected for the Udo Reinemann- International Masterclasses of International Song in Brussels- Belgium and spent a year studying lieder repertoire from all different styles and periods with teachers such as Christianne Stotijn, Ann Murray, Sir Thomas Allen, Sergei Leiferkus, Irwin Gage, Joseph Breinl, and Maciej Pikulski. Other masterclasses followed with Kleese Kelly-Moog, Rudolf Jansen, Endrik Wottrich, Lioba Braun, Caroline Stein, Frank van Aken, and Eva Maria Westbroek. 

Opera roles Syrinx has performed include: W.A. Mozart-Così fan tutte- Fiordiligi, Le nozze di Figaro- Contessa, Don Giovanni- Donna Elvira, H.Purcell- Dido and Aeneas- Belinda/Sorceress, G.Puccini-La Bohème-Mimi, F.Busoni-Arlecchino Colombina.

Syrinx Jessen- Soprano

In 2015 she was awarded a scholarship from the Richard-Wagner Stipendienstiftung-Bayreuther Festspiele. In the same year Syrinx became a solo soprano with the Dutch “Koninklijke Zangvereniging Mastreechter Staar”. As of 2016 she gives concerts for the Dutch Reisopera.
